11 Awesome WordPress Plug-In’s You’ve Probably Never Heard Of

One of the best things about WordPress is the multitude of plug-ins available for it. The library is so vast and spread out, though, that often there are some really great plug-ins that might not cross your radar. I’ve run across a few and thought I would mention them. I use each of these on at least one of my sites.

  1. Flickr Photo Album. If you are a user of Flickr, this plug-in is awesome. It allows you to bring your Flickr gallery into your blog. Photos are viewed ON your blog, and each photo gets a custom URL on your blog’s domain. It also allows you to easily use Flickr photos in your blog posts. All this is done using the Flickr API. You can see it in action in the Photos section of this site.
  2. Yet Another Related Posts Plug-in. I’ve checked out several different plug-ins for doing related posts in WordPress. This one is the best I’ve come across so far. It even puts your related posts into your RSS feed.
  3. Batch Categories. Allows you to assign posts to categories en mass. Useful if you’re trying to reorganize the categories on your blog.
  4. FLV Embed. If you want to embed locally hosted FLV movies into your blog, this plug-in is about the easiest I’ve found. It takes care of putting in the player. All you have to do is tell it where the FLV file is and the dimensions. It takes care of the rest.
  5. HidePost. Want to hide part of your posts and make them available only to certain user levels? This is your plug-in. Obviously, most blogs have no use for this, however if you want to use WordPress as a CMS for a membership site, HidePost can come in handy to provide teaser to all users, but require user login to view the entire post.
  6. OIOpublisher Direct 2.0. OIO Publisher is a full advertising manager for your WordPress blog. Be aware that this is not a free plug-in, however they will soon be coming out with a Lite version which will be free.
  7. Organize Series. This plug-in allows you to group posts into series. It takes care of the navigation between posts and several other things. Writing series on your blog is a great way to build anticipation with your audience.
  8. RSS Footer. Add a line of content to the bottom of all your articles in your RSS feed.
  9. WP-Print. Provides a link to a printer-friendly version of your blog posts.
  10. FriendFeed Comments. Put comments on your post from Friendfeed right underneath the post on your blog. And if the link is not automatically made, you can manually link your post to a FriendFeed thread in your admin panel.
  11. Search HiLite. Highlights a user’s search terms when they use a search engine to find a blog post. So, if a user (for example) clicks into your blog from Google, their search terms will be highlighted.

When attempting to install Flickr Photo Album plugin there was a warning notice prior to installation that this plugin has not been tested with WP2.7.

I attempted installation nevertheless, but recieved a fatal error:-

“Installing Plugin: Flickr Photo Album 1.1

    Downloading plugin package from http://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/tantan-flickr.1.1.zip

    Unpacking the plugin package

    Fatal error: Cannot redeclare pclziputilpathreduction()”

It looks like it probably needs updating.

That’s possible. This is why I always sandbox my WordPress upgrades before pushing to the public blog. :)

I really like the RSS footer and hide post. The hide post would be used if you had some paid subscriptions to your work. and the footer could be some reminders to your readers on upcoming promotions or anticipated posts. Thanks….you’re right I hadn’t heard of these…..OK,i’m lying i have only heard of a few.

Thanks for the list! I have some of them already, but the rest of them seem useful for me except of course #5.

11 awesome plugins you probably never heard of is correct. I certainly never heard of them, but I did find a good use for two of them. Then friendfeedcomments is particularly useful to me along with the RSS footer. I never thought about them before, but I certainly see the usefulness.
