The Use of Blogs
The blog (a slang term derived from the words web log) has quickly become one of the latest trends on the internet. More and more sites are starting their own blogs, and they can be used to keep fresh content on the website, promote products, you name it. In fact, the typical blogger can be broken down into different types:
- Personal bloggers. Probably the most popular, this kind of blogger posts journal-like entries on a variety of topics, including politics, sports, fashion, news events, technology, etc. Many of these blogs have no point at all other than entertainment.
- Business bloggers. Many businesses are now using blogs to promote their products or services on their website. The key here, though, is not to use the blog to post in-your-face advertising. Nobody will be interested in reading that. Using the blog to talk about progress on your business projects, comment on news relevant to your industry, comments on technology used in the business and other such uses would be useful to people interested in your product or service. Strategic uses of a blog in your business can definitely increase sales.
- Organizational bloggers. These people use a blog to communicate with employees in their company, students in their school, members of their club, etc. This is an excellent way to communicate within a group, whether large or small.
Communication is the key to all human relations, on a small scale as well as a large, international scale. The blog has become an excellent medium on the internet for increasing communication online. One of the excellent benefits of them has been in the news industry. Whereas we used to be limited to corporate news sources such as TV and newspaper, today the blog world often breaks news before the more traditional news can. Other times, blogs can help check the mainstream news, pointing out bias, contradictions, and inaccuracies. So, whether it be in the news, or just talking about the fashion tastes of Hollywood celebrities, the blog is an excellent way to bring communication and information to everyone.
So, the question now is should you blog? Should you bust out a new blog on your website? Anyone can blog, but not anyone has what it takes to make it worth your time. Here are a few guidelines that will determine whether you should start a blog or not on your website:
- You have a strong interest in a particular topic and wish to regularly share your thoughts with the public.
- You have the time and inclination to update your blog regularly. Nobody wants to read a blog where the most recent post is months old.
- You are able to handle all types of feedback on your blog. Most blogs allow comments from readers on your individual posts, and you need to be able to take them, the good and the bad.
- You are running a site which promotes your business and want a way to keep in touch with readers and clients. Again, ensure you have the time and inclination to update regularly.
One of the biggest mistakes of a blogger (one I’m guilty of myself many times) is not posting enough material in their blog. Any successful blog must be updated regularly, but must also contain enough information. Not enough links. Not enough rants. A successful blog takes a lot of work. So post well and post often. You want readers to come back every day or two, not once every few weeks, if ever.
If you fit the bill, by all means, start a blog on your website.
