Envision Your Ideal Scene

One of the big parts to starting and running your own business is to think ahead. In fact, one of the chief reasons for failure when doing your own business is losing grip on your original goals and instead being a day-to-day technician. When you start your business, you have high hopes and you are using your imagination to envision where you want to be a few years later. But, before too long, you are so busy coping with the demands of clients that you end up a slave to your own business, working 80 hour weeks and having no time off.

Many of us who work full-time on the internet do envision a successful business, but with the ability to make our own schedules and get time off whenever we want. This is one of the most enticing aspects of being your own boss. Part of making that happen is to continue to work ON your business rather than working IN your business. In other words, do not become just a day-to-day technician. That’s no different than a regular employee. If that’s where you are heading or where you are, what is really the difference between that and working for somebody else?

BE the executive for your business. Yes, at the beginning, you will need to perform every job in the company, but always take some time to put all that aside and simply be the executive. Do some strategic planning and look at your goals. Make sure that the actions you are performing day in and day out actually align to achieve the goals you have. Your business is there to serve you, not the other way around.

To start setting things up correctly, sit down and envision the company as it should run in the ideal scene. The ideal scene is that set of situations which encompass the way it should all be if it were exactly as it should be. Part of the ideal scene is to envision the size of your company, its gross income, the structure, etc. Exacly specify the products of your company, then design a set of processes that will achieve that product. Assign positions to the process flow. These are the staff positions which are necessary to get everything in your ideal company. For each position, you then want to write a document which outlines all the actions that need to be done, the other positions that will be dealt with, the products to achieve, the standards, and the statistics used to measure the productivity of that position. This will take some time, but when this is complete, you will then have a company which is written up fully and is thus separate from you. IT no longer depends on your knowledge to operate. Others can now take over those positions and perform the jobs as you would. So, therefore you can start hiring and replacing yourself.

By comparing where you are now with your ideal scene, you will see the differences and then know what to focus on. Be sure to break it down into component parts. Saying you want to make a million dollars when you are making a tenth of that and then saying “Well, I need to 10X my income” is great, but the goal is so large that its basically theoretical. You want practical goals here. Things you can apply starting now.

One of the things I am working on in my company now is documenting all the various jobs in the company. I have also created a organizing board. All of this is going to eventually form a full package of documentation which, when read and understood, will give another a full picture of how to operate my company. Not only does this force me to envision my company the way it SHOULD run, but when done it puts me into a position where I am separate from the company. I can hire others and have them take over for me. The goal is to make the company successful but not have it be my life.

Always look ahead with your entreprenurial life and envision what you want from it.
