Bloggers: Don’t Be a Fat Ass

One of the biggest drawbacks of this job (being a professional blogger) is that you sit - A LOT. And if you’re not careful, it will catch up with you.

I’ve let it catch up to me. Hi, my name is David Risley and I am a fat ass.

OK, if you saw me in person, you probably wouldn’t think so. I’m about 6′2” and am currently sitting at anywhere between 225 and 228 pounds, depending on when I jump on the scale. My ideal weight is probably around 190 pounds. So, I am overweight. Not a fatty, but overweight. It is actually sad to say that I’m average. I probably am, but that doesn’t bode well for America.

I’m not a big believer in fancy diets. Fad diets are just that - fads. I think what it all comes down to is eating healthy, not over-eating and, of course, exercise. Reminds me of the Mad TV skit where the secret of dieting is “eat less, move more”.

So, I need to get exercise into my daily routine. There is a new gym that has gone in right down the road and I think I’ll go down tomorrow and join.

Local Tampa Bay tech blogger Robert Nelson, of Gadgetell, is putting me to shame. He’s out there running frickin’ marathons. What the hell is this, Robert? You trying to make me look bad? ;)

So, I guess I’ll have to eat less and move more.

[...] This blog post by David Risley kind of hit a raw nerve today because it is a problem that all bloggers face sooner or later. [...]

Personally I prefer my own fat ass to a beanpole; yet like you I need to lose weight, and I’ve put it on for pretty much the same reason. I’ve thought of cheating with liposuction, but exercise is really the key as you say. Needs be as needs must, and less weight = a healthier you = long life - So stay fit so that we can enjoy your blogs longer.

Besides the two or three hours spent blogging, I spend a lot of time on computers doing other things like repairing them for other folks. A few years ago I noticed that I was not feeling well and gaining weight. Lets face it these computers are addictive to some folks. I started an exercise routine then and have kept it up over the years. Being that I have no health coverage this is a good thing! These days I feel fit: I can jog three miles if I wish to without much effort! I don’t need to go to a gym because my gym is at my home: a free weight bench, a bicycle, and lots of room to jog. I do stretches when I get up and before I go to bed. Over the years I went from a little over 200 to 170lbs! All I can say is to start out very slowly and be consistent! DO NOT OVER DO IT! Be nice to your body.

good,i think i have to eat less and move more, too.

This video is so funny, and so painfully on target.

I sit all day in front of a computer, too, but have been working for several years to incorporate work outs. Running is pretty easy — no gym membership or special equipment needed — and I did that for a few years, since I’m too lazy to buy a bike and drive it somewhere safe to ride, or join a pool and go through the icy water green hair ear infection insanity. Recently I started boxing (http://theglowingedge.blogspot.com/2008/07/im-l...), which is my favorite so far. One hour, $30 for gloves, 1000 calories burned. That’s what I’m talking about.

Thanks for the call to action, and the laugh along the way.

Hey David!

We’re in the same boat here. I for myself have started running on a daily basis. I feel much better, sleep better and have more energy.

Love the video btw!

CK
