Ma.Gnolia Going Open Source, More Exciting Than The Guy Made It Seem

magnolia Here at Gnomedex, the guys at Ma.gnolia have announced that they are going open source. This is actually very interesting news. If you look at what Wordpress has done for the world of blogging, you can see the power of what an open source social bookmarking platform can do for the world of social bookmarking.

It looks like they are going to do it right, too. By using open standards and the OpenID, all these various social bookmarking sites that are sure to spring up will be able to speak the same language. And the bookmarks will be fed back into the main Ma.gnolia index, making the site a much more powerful source for search.

Very cool announcement. I myself will definitely look into this more for setup on PCMech.

Unfortunately, the guy making the announcement was almost like watching paint dry. As a result, he really didn’t give the nature of the announcement justice. The general consensus on Twitter during the talk was that @missrogue should speak more.

You can continue to follow Gnomedex on Twitter using hashtag #gnomedex.

Update:
Mashable posted this story right before it was announced on stage. Marshall Kirkpatrick, of RWW, is here and posted the story from here at Gnomedex. Very cool to see the evolution of the web story right here.

Thanks for the writeup, David. It's great to see the reception that the M2 announcement is getting, and agreeing on the potential of what we're going to build. Happily, a presentation not coming off well is over in an hour, and our attention is on building something that goes far.
