Sure we all need and like to make a bit from our blogs, but if you burn the very people that come to your blog in the first place then it'll be a very short lived money making experience. Having said that, we are all exposed to A LOT of commercialism and therefore we do accept some advertising so long as the content being offered is useful and valuable for the time we spend on the blog. Its common sense if you feel bad about putting ads on your site, it is probably because you don't feel like your time is worth anything. And that is a lie! If you don't get over that, you can continue working for free if you WANT to, but if you don't monetize, don't expect income to come magically. And monetizing does NOT always mean ads. The first few months I didn't make more than a few dollars. After I started getting indexed by google and my pages started showing up in searches, the traffic started coming.
