Blog Setup = Huge Business Opportunity

Blogs are sprouting up all over the place these days. And it isn’t going to stop anytime soon. I expect this recession is resulting in a huge growth of blogging. This opens up a huge opportunity for people who know even basic blog setup.

This is not something I have any intention of doing myself. I like to help people USE their blogs to achieve their aims. Even though I can set up a Wordpress blog with my eyes closed and my hands tied, it isn’t something I want to do on a paid basis because I don’t want to trade time for money like that.

But, what about you? Do you know how to set up Wordpress? Do basic theme design and setup? Install plug-in’s? For many of my readers, this is probably child’s play. For most of the world, though, this stuff is HARD.

Besides, most people just want the technical stuff done for them so they can get on with writing. To the majority, the technical stuff is a barrier and they hate it.

There is a huge business opportunity here for so many people. Offer to set up people’s blogs for them. Charge them money.

Even if you charge somebody as little as $100, chances are you can set up a blog with a pre-designed theme in an hour or less. Even if it took you a full hour, that’s $100/hour. And most smart people will spend $100 to save them the endless hours of research to learn how to set up a blog on their own.

Couple this with a little bit of marketing to teach them the benefits of self-hosting, having your own dot-com domain name, etc.

Lastly, target your local area. Sure, you can offer this to anybody on the Internet, but if you promote to relevant circles in your own local area, you will have much less competition. Word gets around that you are the person who can do quick blogs for people.

Listen, I know at least a couple people in my own local area who are doing this. For them, setting up a Wordpress blog is trivial. To their clients, not so much. And there are a lot of people out there who want blogs but don’t know how to start them.

  • I think it's great that you're putting your hand out and helping people with business ideas.

    I would have to agree, that now is the time to be marketing yourself as a "blog knowitall" if you're into selling set up services for startup businesses or self-employed entrepreneurs.
  • I think you are dead on here. I wanted to know how to do it because that is just the way I like to do things, even after learning how to Install myself. I am now looking for someone to customize themes and plug-ins for my needs. My time is better spent tending to other business needs and interests than invested in trying to become a Word Press wizard. It is a Win/Win opportunity for me and an entrepreneur with the requisite skill sets.
  • This is an easy way to get set up with a consulting service. And you're right, David...to most us reading 'this blog,' it's like child's play but to many of our own readers who want to be engaged in blogging it might as well be rocket science. Handled the right way, for a blog-consultant who targets entry-level bloggers and website owners, it can mean some dependable, extra cash every month.
  • I think this is excellent advice - it's easy to get wrapped up in what we already know, and then forget that what has become easy to us isn't that way for others. I help out friends with online marketing stuff, and there's no reason not to think about charging an hourly or a flat fee.
  • How timely this post is! I've been talking talking to two local nonprofits about this very thing. It's funny how many folks are put off by the term "blog". I've had to convince them about the easy CMS and lack of reliance on designers, etc.

    My concern is that I mostly know about web-based Wordpress.com templates. Where can I learn more about Wordpress.org and using downloadable templates? or should I not bother going there? i.e. Nonprofits want to have plug-ins to allow online donations but I'm not sure if this is possible with the online templates.

  • Very interesting. I usually do it for free, but it makes sense that if more people are dying to blog they need a helping hand. There are plenty of tutorials out there, but for those with little web experience it's a steep learning curve.

  • Something to notice here is that most business owners couldn't care less what it is called. If it brings more business and makes more money than it takes then it's OK.
  • This is a great idea; I can't believe I didn't think of it before.

    One question, kind of a technical question - the two hosting services I've used have automatic Wordpress installation. How would you go about setting this up for the client? Would you ask them for the login credentials to their hosting account and do it there? Or give them a step-by-step guide to setting it up and hope they can do it on their own?
  • I agree there is a big market for this. I've set up some friends blogs for free. I also agree it's trading time for money. If money is tight, it can be good to get some cash flow going. If anything, hire a VA to do it and simply use the traffic on your site...and just take orders. That way you're not getting sucked into something that is not time-leveraged.
  • Time is really just so valuable, though, don't you guys agree? I find it's getting more and more imperative to choose the things that I do very wisely....
  • Yeah I agree that blog is a great business opportunity, it is truly.. and it depends on a person whether he/she likes to do technical stuff,others like it, some don't.. And there are many job opportunities and job opening for blog writer and setting up blog contents and others.. Infact most people make this a way to earn a living.
  • A great idea, David and I wish I had thought of it myself before. But I'm a shy sort of person and find it difficult getting into conversations with people to be able to introduce the blog writing idea to them.
    What suggestions do people have to promote this business that both does not cost a lot of money and does not involve too much 'face to face' advertising?

    Perfectly said David. I have looked for someone in Ft Worth Texas to help; even train me how to get started. In fact the technical aspect has been my mountain to climb. I have months of articles written. Additionally I have a ton of video ideas. Each time I think I am ready, I find myself reading more and discovering how much I don't know.
