Random Updates: Income, #bloggerdiet, Travels
Today, I thought I would write up a little “random update” post. Instead of getting on my soapbox.
October has been a busy month. So, here we go…
The Failure Of “Blog Monetization”
In blogger circles, the word “monetize” is a huge buzzword. Everybody is looking to “monetize” their blogs. Typically, you already have a blog and then you think, “Hmmm, how can I make money with this thing?”
The language we use says alot about our approach. It can also place an artificial limit on our mindsets and ultimately keep you from ever making money.
In thinking about this, I think that the phrase “blog monetization” is a symptom of going about it completely wrong.
Time To Kick Ass And Think Bigger
Judging from that headline, you might think I’m sitting here feeling totally PUMPED!
Well, yes and no. Truthfully, I’m sitting in my hotel room in Scottsdale, AZ right now, at Jeff Walker’s Product Launch Formula LIVE event. I’m conferenced out and I’m beat. Last week, I was in Vegas for Blogworld Expo. Then I went home to Florida for 3 days, only to fly BACK out here for this event….
I’ve talked to a LOT of people. And I’m beat. I’m actually kind of an introvert, and daddy needs to recharge. And I can’t do that in large crowds. So, I’m sitting in my room and I might just thaw out in here tonight rather than hit the bar.
But…
I’m frickin’ PUMPED anyway. For the future. And I’ll tell you why…
You’re Not A Newspaper, Stop Acting Like One
Hey, you know what?
Newspapers aren’t doing so well these days. Revenue is way down and they’re trying to find new ways to live in the age of “new media”. Their income comes from ads and classified listings. Well, advertisers have a lot better options these days. And Craigslist makes newspaper classified ads less enticing. I could go on and on about it, really, but I’ll spare them.
The newspaper model is slowly dying away. So, why is it that so many bloggers are trying to act like them?
Planning, Dreaming, And Staying Broke. Or…
This is a guest post by Joe Gilder.
Does This Describe You?
You sit at your computer, switching between day-dreaming of making a full-time income from your blog and brainstorming ideas for your blog. You want to be David Risley. You want to create and release products and sell them by the hundreds.
And so? You plan.
Plan, plan, plan, plan, plan.
You’ve got three different text files on your desktop called “Product Ideas.” You’ve got an entire “Product Ideas” folder in Evernote with a dozen or more notes in it. Sometimes you even whip out a good ol’ legal pad (I can’t tell you how much I love a good legal pad) and write out some new ideas.
“I’m doing it,” you say to yourself. “Look how productive I’m being. Look at all these amazing ideas. If David Risley could see this, he’d be über-impressed.”
Bad news. If David could see you, he’d reach through the computer and smack your pretty little face.
Post-Blogworld 2010 Brain Dump and Wrap Up
So, I’m back in my office after several days in Las Vegas for Blogworld 2010. I just turned off the two membership drives I was running while I was away, and now it is time to gather my thoughts and post a little “brain dump” about the event.
This was the best Blogworld event so far. Rick, Deb, Dave and the rest of the Blogworld team did a fantastic job with the event and everybody who went should take a moment to thank them. Pulling off an event this size is no small task.
6 Cornerstones For A Killer About Page On Your Blog
Most bloggers realize that they need an “About Page” on their blog. However, that doesn’t mean it is done very well.
After looking at a LOT of blogs over the course of doing blog evaluations, I often see that the “About Page” is under-utilized and not set up correctly.
See, it isn’t that there is single right way to do it. However, the page has to be written by taking into account the typical mindset of a new arrival on your blog. And, that is…
What the Ancient Romans Can Teach You About Your Own Blog
The ancient Romans did a lot of things right. They were actually quite advanced for their time, with many advances in energy, engineering and construction. One of their major innovations was their system of aqueducts.
See, Rome was a bustling metropolis with water demands far beyond what the region would provide without man-made assistance. So, over a span of about 500 years, the Romans built 11 aquaducts to feed the city of Rome. These aquaducts were responsible for bringing potable water into the city as well as funneling waste out of the city (yes, the Romans even had indoor plumbing).
This entire system, built over 2,000 years ago, had a singular purpose – take a randomly flowing resource (water) and funnel it in a controlled fashion to certain destinations.
The Romans would never have pondered that, all this time later, some blogger would find some analogy between their aquaducts and what we do on the Internet. But, that’s exactly what I’ve done.

10 Last Minute Tips For Blogworld Expo Attendees #bwe10
The 2010 Blogworld Expo is THIS WEEK. In fact, I’m flying out tomorrow morning (yes, a bit earlier than most since I have some meetings planned before the event starts).
I’ve been watching the #bwe10 hashtag on Twitter and there appears to be a lot of first-timers to Blogworld this year. And that’s AWESOME. It is great to see so much interest in this.
This will be my third year at Blogworld. Even though there have been a number of posts out there with Blogworld tips, I thought I would offer a few of my own. These are simple, but they will make your trip smoother and more rewarding.
Hey, I'm David. Dont' know where to start? No worries. Let me help you get started.
