25 Random Things You Probably Didn’t Know About David Risley

I thought I would take a moment and divert into something a little less “how to” oriented. Here are 25 random factoids about your’s truly that you probably wouldn’t know by just reading this site.

  1. I was a loner in high school. Like, seriously. Most kids saw me as the smart kid. Maybe I was, but I think a lot of it was because I didn’t talk much. I find this most ironic now given that I am in one of the most social fields ever. :)
  2. My wife and I met on Eharmony.com. It matched us together and I thought she was hot as hell. And she was Russian. And a chemical engineer (means she’s smart). I thought she was so out of my league. We’ve been married for two years. We should do a commercial.
  3. I used to listen to talk radio a lot more than I do now. Used to enjoy Glenn Beck. He’s still funny, but the guy is such a downer these days that I choose to ignore him mostly.
  4. I worked for Sam’s Club when I was in college. Red vest and everything.
  5. I used to shoot a lot of pool and drink a lot of beer while doing it. I actually got really good at pool and even got invited to a few hobbyist tournaments for pool players.
  6. I’m a big jazz guy, although I can like most forms of music. My favorite jazz pianist is Chick Corea.
  7. When I was a kid, I decided I didn’t like grits. I never changed my mind.
  8. I used to own and drive (for fun) a Mazda Miata. I could barely fit in the damn thing because I’m 6’2”.
  9. I think my daughter is prettier than everybody else’s. Sorry to the other parents out there. :)
  10. I’m a big lover of Florida and the beaches. Don’t get out there as much these days, but my dream is to own a house on the beach.
  11. I am a certified SCUBA diver. I really need to schedule some dives. Haven’t done it much lately mainly because my wife is kinda scared of it. But, I’ll just do it myself.
  12. I have owned 5 cars in my life. A Nissan Pickup, a Ford Explorer, a Honda Accord, a Mazda Miata, and now I drive an Acura TL.
  13. When I was a kid, I played saxophone. I wasn’t very good, really. I sold my alto sax long ago but I still own a tenor which sits in my closet.
  14. I am a registered Republican although the party can kiss my ass today. I consider myself a conservative without a party. Politics in general just sucks now. It accomplishes nothing and just makes things worse.
  15. I love food. Especially Italian food. Sucks, too, because my body definitely does better on meat and veggies and most of my favorite foods don’t fall into that category.
  16. I collect shot glasses whenever I go to a place I’ve never been before. I have about 35 shot glasses on top of my desk from states across the country, the Caribbean islands, Italy, and various points in Russia.
  17. When I was young, my friends and I used to play mock army in the woods in front of our house. We’d run around in the dark and hunt each other. Fancy hide-and-seek. It was a lot of fun.
  18. I enjoy fishing. I used to go out with a cast net and catch mullet around Fort DeSoto Park in St. Petersburg, Florida. If you know what you’re doing, you can have a very productive morning!
  19. I love sailing. My family has a lot of sailors in it and I’ve got the bug, too. One of my goals in life is to own a sailboat. Not very practical, but I can get it out of my system, then sell it.
  20. My favorite color is blue. I think it might have something to do with the water.
  21. I own 3 Macs and now use Macs exclusively. I think switching to the Mac was one of the best things I’ve done. I used Windows for many years beforehand and I think most Windows users just won’t understand the elegance of OS X until they’ve had a chance to use a Mac for a little while.
  22. I’m a “big picture” kind of guy and I take pride in being able to look at a situation and fairly quickly figure it out. I’m sometimes a “shoot from the hip” kind of guy. I don’t like details too much and I like to let somebody else worry about that. Hasn’t burned me yet.
  23. I don’t like pants. I hate wearing a suit and tie. Most of the time, I’m wearing shorts and a t-shirt. Sometimes I’ll wear a polo or button-down shirt. As for the feet? Sandals. I own two pairs of sandals, and the ones with black and white stripes don’t match hardly anything but I couldn’t care less.
  24. I love my wife, but she and I are like yin and yang. Our backgrounds are very different and we’re two very different people. Makes for an interesting relationship.
  25. Sometimes I yell and cuss at slow drivers. I can’t help it. They are so damn slow! ;) My wife gets annoyed when I do that and I have to really try to curb it when my daughter is in the car.

I can relate, I was a loner in school my self. I was a bit shy, actually that’s an understatement. By the way, I’m totally stealing your list concept and using it for my about me page.

For a guy smart enough to switch to a Mac, how come you still spell “yours” with an apostrophe?

Gina, they thought I was the smart kid in school. Doesn’t mean I actually was and doesn’t mean I’m an expert on grammar. ;) I guess its more “shoot from the hip” blogging.

Good one! Strangely enough I’ve just been “tagged” by another blogger and had to write seven things people don’t know about me. Will post it later this evening. Also a diver, have a boat, have been known to commit the odd apostrophe crime and really want a Mac. Major difference is cars – I’ve had over 100 – yes really!

Dave you have excellent musical taste: Jazz is amazing music!

Although I thought Vista was a massive dissappointment and sucked bigtime, I never left Windows: I just carried on using XP and still do to this day on my 2 PCs.

(I’ll be building a third one to run Windows 7 on; but I think I’ll wait for RTM before I do.)

Just found your blog and this was a great intro post to start with. Interesting guy. I love jazz too, and recommend Gonzalo Rubalcava (sp.?) a Cuban jazz pianist, if you can find a track online and give a listen. Looking forward to reading more!

Yeah – I kind of thought it might be the type of thing a person could continually add to. Start with 25 or something, make the title “25 things… and growing” or “…subject to continual updates”

Thanks for sharing, David, (you seem like a down to earth kind of guy), especially “Politics in general just sucks now. It accomplishes nothing and just makes things worse.” I couldn't agree more! Beautiful daughter too… you are so right :-)
