Blog Evaluation: FamousBloggers.Net

In the first of several video blog evaluations I’ll be doing, today I am evaluating Famous Bloggers. Below is the video eval and a few take-aways…

Some quick take-away’s:

  • Always take into account the frame of mind of the person viewing your call to action. It is easy to think it makes sense, not realizing that the people looking at your site don’t necessarily have the same thoughts as you do.
  • Be careful of using potential words in your call to action which people may not understand.
  • Be careful of too much visual clutter. While a site can look good, it might not perform very well when there are multiple things to do on the screen. You want the design of the site to aid the reader’s eyes in finding the most important element on the page (which you need to identify).

Also recommended: Run a click-tracking test using CrazyEgg to see where people’s attention is being pulled.

That’s pretty cool that you’re reviewing blogs online. I don’t see too many people doing that outside of events.

I’d have to agree with your thoughts that the site is just way too busy. There’s nothing wrong with monetizing a site but if you’re not careful, it just looks like a spammy site focused on making money and the content is a necessary evil for generating revenue.

I love your candor. Great feedback David. These reviews are gonna rock :-)

  • http://davidrisley.com David Risley

Yeah, these reviews are all bonuses for the recent Only72 special. Got quite a few of these to do, and its going to roll out over the next month or two. Wouldn’t usually take so long, but I got a launch coming up and this blog will be involved. ;-)

A good review, I would find the popup annoying more then anything else.

  • Anthony

Nice lookin’ site, but yeah, no good reason to opt-in.

    like something opting-in for!

CrazyEggs is awesome to find the hot spots on your site..Niel and I sat down for an interview last month and he broke down the whole concept behind crazyeggs. Good stuff David

How the tech PC site is doing..

Some do, but they have their place. I’m not complaining about the fact he has a popup…. just that I think the offer on it isn’t that compelling.

Not only an excellent website review but I’ve found a new site I didn’t know about. Keep up the good work David

How much did he have to pay for that review? Hope not more than 10 or 20 bucks at the most. You salic the same garble like 7 times over.

This is a really great analysis, I will give Hesham a buzz and let him know about this post! :)

Awesome review David, I’m definitely going to enjoy these! :)

Great advice on getting the viewpoint of a new user when looking at your site.

Yeah, if you like the blogging niche, they’ve got some great stuff over there, no doubt. :-)

This gave me a lot of insight coming from a professional blogger standpoint. I need this same thing from my blog so I know what I need to do for 2011. This was a great review!

It’s always hard to know exactly what “works” in a layout – a lot of people HATE my blog because of the colors I use! I think if your blog is going to be popular, it doesn’t matter how “busy” the page or how “crappy” the design. I’ve run across many marvelously awful blogs that attract thousands of visitors (scratches head) “just because they do” – - – Peaceful Blessings to all this Holiday and End-of-year season!

I redesigned my own blog theme after 2 years of sticking with my old one because I needed to focus on the user experience and a cleaner look to it.

Hesham from Famousbloggers.net probably saw your review and he has improved some of the things you mentioned. For example, he has disabled the popup opt-in box and restructured the layout a little bit. But overall, it still looks busy.

One thing I like about Hesham is he is very good in building a strong community on his site.

Hey David – love the evaluation.

I’m with Brian L. While the site looks improved, it still looks REALLY busy. There’s just simply too much going on. I think the site would look a whole lot better with just one sidebar instead of two (or what I think is two).
