Bloggers + Apple = Techmeme Echo Chamber

OK, we all know that bloggers are fascinated by Apple. We love to follow what Apple does. I personally really dig Apple hardware and I am generally more excited about what Apple does than what another computer company does. Good. Groovy.

But, let us look at Techmeme right now:

That entire red area is all echo chamber of today’s Iphone launch. Are you kidding me? The next section beneath that is about Steve Jobs keynote.

How many bloggers does it take to screw in a light bulb?

At PCMech, I initially thought that we had to post a story about this Iphone launch. Then this evening, I ask: why? Every site in the known world is talking about the same thing. There is literally NOTHING novel to say about it. Quite frankly, there wasn’t anything incredibly novel to say this morning either. We all saw this Iphone launch coming. Who didn’t know we were going to see an Iphone launch from WWDC?

So, am I being negligent to skip the story on PCMech?

@4fthawaiian on Twitter replied to me about this saying:

If everyone employed those standards there would only be 1 or 2 tech blogs in the entire interwebs :P

Nah, I doubt that. There might be a lot of us bloggers interested in the same thing, but it is our job to find some unique angle when we can. If we’re talking about a simple news story, sometimes just joining the echo chamber gets us nowhere. Unless, of course, the only aim is to get onto Techmeme in the first place. :)

Wow. Most humbled to be quoted. I’m fairly sure that’s a first. I’m not sure what that says about either of us ;)

I was, of course, kidding.. Well, mostly. My own, rather pointless, experience with blogging though is where that sentiment mainly originates. So many times I’ve thought about blogging about a particular topic, only to find that my point of view is being fairly ably demonstrated in an existing post (or, as in this case, I can happily express my POV through a comment on an existing post).

I agree that GOOD bloggers do try and find a unique angle / rant / etc, but I think there are more than a few who just bring the echo, and that we’d be better off without the noise.

Your last paragraph sums up a lot of it, I think..

“Unless, of course, the only aim is to get onto Techmeme in the first place”

    Ahem ;)

Great post! If I was the sort of person who used a feed aggregator, you’d SO be in it now.
