Is Blogging Right For You?

Most of the people who read my blog and blogs like it are interested in making money from blogging.

Actually, if we just cut to the chase, they’re just interested in making money online. If blogging happens to be the way to do it, then so be it. Right?

The problem is that I think too many people are following this gig with the wrong expectations.

I had a guy (no names) who enrolled in Blog Masters Club. He was quite motivated. But, he ended up requesting a cancellation before the money-back guarantee period ended. Of course, we honored it. His reason for canceling? He decided to suspend blogging.

Now, this person told me he needed to be making money within 6 months. In fact, he had quit his job in order to pull it off. He’d do whatever it takes, and we had several back-and-forth chat conversations about it. My assistant took care of the matter of cancellation, but his reason sparked my interest and this blog post.

Because blogging isn’t for everybody.

If you’re just looking to make money online – and money is your only goal – then don’t start blogging.

Blogging is a crappy way to make a buck. :)

But, of course, if you’ve been reading my stuff for any length of time, you know that. I have said repeatedly that a blog is really only a marketing platform for a real business. You need to have a real business with things to sell. You simply use the blog as a way to attract eyeballs.

Blogging, alone, is not a good way to make a full-time income. Ultimately, you simply HAVE to blog with an end in mind. If money is a desire, then ultimately you have to sell something. It could be somebody else’s thing or your own, and the best combination is some of both. Advertising is a slow way to make money, and is usually mistaken for “blog monetization” by too many people.

Trying to make money blogging with ads alone is like trying to drive down the interstate in 1st gear. Sure, you’ll have a seriously high RPM and probably burn yourself out, but ultimately, you’re going nowhere.

Just like with a car, though, first gear is just a short-term way to accelerate the car and move to the next gear. As you accelerate, you must switch to a higher gear in order to go faster. With blogging, you can use ads to get the ball rolling, but the higher gears will be things like affiliate marketing and selling your own product.

Misestimation of Effort

Now, because most bloggers don’t think in terms of real business, they end up trying to operate on the theory that you just write a lot, traffic builds, then somehow money will manifest. It usually leads to frustration and quitting. The reason is because you weren’t thinking in terms of business.

Other bloggers underestimate what it takes to build up a popular blog. This is where building upon a passion comes in, and why I say that you shouldn’t do this if money is your only goal. The beginning days of blogging can feel like like a lost cause. You won’t be making much of anything. If you’re building on a true interest, it can get you through. Otherwise, you’ll likely give up because the money doesn’t come fast enough.

OK, so where does this leave us? What are you supposed to do if money is your primary goal and blogging is just a means to a hopeful end for you?

Well, there are other ways to make money online without blogging in the way that I do.

Alternatives To Blogging?

For example, you can get into affiliate niche blogs. With this model, your purpose is different. You’re not trying to build up an audience or a brand. You’re usually just trying to rank high enough in search engines to attract some people who are in a buyer’s mindset, throw them over the edge with your content to get them to buy, then directing them on with your affiliate link. Do this over and over, with many different niche blogs, and you can build up an income.

I refer to that model as going “horizontal” with your business model, whereas what I do is go “vertical”. In other words, my approach is to go deep in a niche, build a brand and reputation, and a real following. When you go “horizontal”, you really don’t care about building up a brand… you’re just driving clicks on your affiliate links using a network of niche blogs.

There’s also traffic monetization, where you drive PPC traffic into affiliate offers. Work the numbers so that you are making more in commissions than what you pay in PPC.

Ultimately, the entire “secret” of making money online is this:

  1. Find out what people want.
  2. Get traffic.
  3. Give them what they want and charge for it.

There are multiple ways to do either of those steps. Blogging is only one of them.

So, is blogging for you?

Do you have the right expectations?

Don’t get me wrong… this is an awesome business model. But, you’ve got to understand it for what it is and have the right expectations. And I think that’s where a lot of new bloggers fall on their faces.

I love that you’re keeping it real on this topic. It’s so crucial to see these things for what they really are. A blog is just a tool. It’s an awesome, valuable, highly leveraged way to converse with a large number of people…but trust takes a while to build, and people just don’t throw their money around online any easier than they do in the “real” world. Actually, online it might take a minute LONGER to build trust, especially in a market where your customers/clients aren’t adept at how to seek out and gauge social proof.

The upside of blogging is that it allows you to really target any audience very effectively, and you can build a customer base across the entire world. You’re not locked into your geographic sphere anymore. Also, it’s very low cost…but is it a super-fast way to make tons of money? C’mon. I’m continually surprised by how many think this.

Blogging is not a cure all, but importantly…neither is anything. God I hope this guy isn’t dropping blogging just to pick up some other tactic with the idea that THAT will be a “make money fast” solution. Businesses take a little time to build. It’s SO worth it, but quitting your day job prematurely with the idea that you’re gonna make it big in a few months or less is just silly.

You know what actually makes building a profitable business take LONGER? Bouncing around from one tactic to the next, trying to find the quick fix. It ends up wasting even more time than if you just sit down and do what it takes.

Agreed. I see a lot of people constantly learning and looking for tricks, and spending far too little time actually executing any of it.

Thanks for this post. Reminders like these are so crucial. Your blogger blueprint was the proverbial “straw that broke the camels back” that finally moved me to add /blog to my site. But of course, it hasn’t stopped there. I come back to your site on a regular basis for that shot in the arm to keep me moving toward my goal of having my site start to generate income. And it’s posts like these that are the BIG YELLOW HIGHLIGHTER that remind me “you aren’t selling anything yet!”

Hi David. You’re like my new “truth fairy”. Here I thought like I was going the crazy way by just posting articles, feeling out the market and trying to use my blog to build some authority status and credibility.

Then maybe somewhere down the line I’ll try and promote my membership site. So in essence I thought I was going to first and foremost just use my blog to build trust and relationships.

It seems that I was actually on the right path in some convoluted way.

I’m only in the start-up phase now and your post just confirmed what I thought and that is that it would be difficult to make money from a blog just starting out.

Unlike the person who unsubscribed in your post, I lost my job and it seems that I’m too old to get another. So I don’t have the option of unsubscribing from whatever I can do to replace my income.

So to cut a long story short. Thanks for the enlightening article. I needed to hear that.

I loved the article. It is true that blogging or any entrepreneurial task is not for 90% of the population. They want it handed to them and then drop out at the first sign of work. Proof of this is all the late night Carlton Sheets cources still in the wrapper on Ebay.

    Hey David:

Thanks for keeping it real. Yes, blogging is just a tool to use to build a business both online and offline. There are blogs that do make money strictinly for advertising but it is too hard to follow that model these days, especially for those that want to make money quickly.

I personally am going to try my hands at affliate niche marketing (outside the IM niche). Of course I plan on using the WordPress blogging platform to create my sites because it is so easy.

To me is seems that being successful is all about building relationships with prospects, customers and even other marketers.

    Take care!

    - Rick

    You’re right about that. :-)

Back in the day, I had one of those Carlton Sheets courses. Never used it. ;-)

Well they don’t say most people fail at making any money online for nothing because it’s true. Most people live in a world of imagination and dreams it’s all in their heads. If for once they step outside their heads and see the real world maybe they will realize that oh it’s a business like anything else so they need to work at it through all the phases of ups and downs. Face it most people hate work and separate work and play. From when I was born I was always taught work is play, play is work. Everything takes time and like anything you need to shed a little blood and face up to one’s fears of failure. I hate it when I hear people talk about separating work and play that work is something tied to a pay check and play is completely separate.

I have this blog I hardly write for anymore for a long time its done nothing but recently I said screw it I can’t take it any longer and put a whole bunch of pages up put them into a autoresponder sequence and then I let the thing lose. I think it takes a moment like this one – a wake up call, an ah screw it moment and then great things happen.

Yes. Yes, I believe blogging is right for me. I’ve finally made this decision after blogging for seven years, all because I read your post, David!

  • Blogshopsantafe

Having been in marketing all my life (I first sold ads in high school) your approach to blogging came naturally to me. Little did I know that after three years of blogging and six months of Blog Masters Club my dream of a money-making blog would come true. Yes, a blog is a marketing tool for a business first. Amen.

You made some great points. Blogging is learning process and when you start you don’t know what to expect. Having realistic expectations is a necessity. Thanks for telling it like it is.

    Thanks David,

Some people think you just throw up a site and the money just starts rolling in. Some fall for the scams out there that promise they will become multi-zillionaires in three seconds while they watch television.

It takes time and LOT OF WORK to get any business making money. That especially applies to an online business. Most people give up before they ever get started and some think and talk about it and never even start.

If a person is not willing to do a LOT OF WORK and never give up they will never make it in business.

The best way to make money is by helping others and enjoying what you do.

    Bill
