Are You A Business Opportunity Seeker?

You might have winced at that question just now. These days, the words “business opportunity” just don’t have the ring to it they once did. Instead, we think things like MLM, pyramid schemes, and disguised affiliate programs where you make somebody else rich and get screwed.

I see some of these things. They advertise as if you’re “starting your own business”. There are promises of thousands of dollars per month with just a few hours of work per week. They parade success stories of people who quit their job and now make more money at home than they did when working. Come to find out, all you are is an affiliate for them. You’re selling THEIR stuff. You’re using some cookie-cutter affiliate site which you’re supposed to go market. In some cases, you actually have to PAY THEM to get started with this.

Just horrible. That’s not a business. You’re making them money – and it usually stops right there. Sadly, I’m hearing more of this now given our current economic situation in the country.

Here’s the common traits that makes these bizopp things attractive to people:

  1. You just want to make money online.
  2. You don’t really care how you go about it.

These people are the easiest marketing bait in the civilized world. You easily fall prey to promises of riches. You also want it on a silver platter. Because you don’t want to work. You don’t even really care how the money is going to be made. You’ll do whatever works, and the easier the better.

The “make money online” world is kept alive by bizopp seekers, and the efforts to cater to these folks are what has helped to sour the reputation of the online marketing community. These days, even honest and legitimate marketers are sometimes painted with this brush.

Are you a bizopp seeker?

What I have observed, after years in this business, is this:

  1. Most newbies to this world start out as bizopp seekers. The idea of making money online is fascinating to them. They have no idea how to do it, and they’ll grasp onto anything with an attached promise that it’ll work. Problem is, they’re being barraged with such promises every day – all with different business models. These bizopp seekers end up getting jerked around. Not by marketers, but by their very own lack of an internal compass on what the hell they want to do with themselves. They’re tire-kickers, and they get led from bizopp to bizopp like a hungry dog gets led to a juicy steak.
  2. The people who actually make it in this business have an internal compass. They are driven by a mission of some kind, even if it is just being happy. They have a sense of ethics. They strategically learn information with the specific purpose of furthering what it is they want to accomplish. These people love money (don’t get me wrong)… however, generally, not everything they do is driven simply by dollar signs. In the end, it is driven by a passion.

In other words, there is an issue of mindset here.

One reason I like helping bloggers is because many bloggers got into this simply because they wanted to HELP. They wanted to SHARE. And that’s noble as hell and I want to help those people cash in on their passion. It drives me.

But, I also have many people who read my blog simply because of the whole money thing. Blogging is just another option that leads them to the pile of gold. Many don’t even have a blog yet (classic tire-kicker). They have no niche and will write about whatever brings in the bucks. The only internal compass is a promise of cash flow.

Now, don’t get me wrong…. if that’s you… I’m not knocking you for it. However, I AM, in my  not-so-subtle way, trying to realign your expectations.

Business opportunity seekers rarely find the goal they’re after because they’re not operating on an internal compass which is aligned with desire and passion.

It takes real tenacity to pull off the ultimate, six-figure win in a new business (online or offline). You’ve got to be driven by something internally to make it happen. You can’t walk around like the usual bizopp seeker, who gets led around with promises of juicier carrots.

So, if you want to make money online – awesome! But, let’s start with your passion and your interests. What would you ENJOY doing every day? You’ve got to answer this without any monetary aims whatsoever.

Money is the result of manufacturing happiness.

Do it. You’ll win.

The drive and passion about your work is what really sets you apart from the world. If you have that then the sky is the limit..

Passion is the fuel that will lead you to your desires. Most people are lacking passion in their lives because they are following a model that they didn’t create. Just doing what everybody else is doing.

Last night, I was thinking about this very topic. I looked at as “I want to improve the world by teaching people how to _____”

I hate those “This is such a good post, David!” comments people leave………….But this IS such a good post, David.

This is such a good post David ;-)

I gave a conference last week to about 200 Spanish students all looking for that magic bullet. They weren’t too happy when I told them about the blood, sweat and tears of real life and the work actually involved.

  • http://davidrisley.com David Risley

    Heh. Thanks. :-)

  • http://davidrisley.com David Risley

Yeah, I know. Its a tough balance when you’re in the marketing game. Even people who intellectually know it takes work are emotionally looking for that magic bullet. And, as a marketer, you wanna go for emotion. But, DAMN…. catch-22. ;-)

  • http://www.houses-for-sale-in-spain.net grahunt

Now all I need is a 1997 dollar course telling them it is a magic bullet! Oh no others have had that idea already haven’t they?

I guess this means we shouldn’t trust those vendors at ClickBanks then. Its the whole MLM/Affiliate/Spinning, tire-kicking wheeler.

But then again, wouldn’t it be against a few advices saying, “Seize that opportunity!” or something? I suppose its really by our judgement and better experience of whether we should take that opportunity or not. Right?

Just like I know you’re not knocking the make money online community, I know you’re not knocking on mlms or affiliates either. Because I’ve oddly met some successful mlms, who are happy marketing other people’s products. A different shoe for a different person. :)

But like with mmo, they worked their ass off to do it. And mlms have a bad industry rep because they do lure the majority of people into believing its easy. It’s not a reflection of the industry as a whole. Just that most mlms that leave that bad salesy aftertaste are those that only joined with the promise to make a fast buck.

Like you said, for these people, there’s a lack of an internal compass. Just the image of a carrot danging on a string.

I was actually kind of sad. :( Because when I first read your headline, I thought “Well yeah. All business owners should keep an eye for opportunities.” That was a no brainer to me. And I thought you were going to say something about that.
:P Didn’t know you were going to talk about the tire-kickers (though I love the article all the same!). I just have to agree with you and think its unfortunate that the default for “business opportunity” are magic bullet programs, mlms, and affiliates, instead of what the phrase is really suppose to mean.

  • http://davidrisley.com David Risley

I’ve met honest MLMers….. that form of marketing has nothing wrong with it. But, yeah, it has a shady reputation.

  • http://davidrisley.com David Risley

What does this have to do with Clickbank? I mean yeah, there are a lot of dumb products in there, but don’t cast too wide a brush, because I know many honest, good people who have chosen to sell their stuff via Clickbank, too. I’ve used Clickbank. It has many conveniences to it, as a vendor.

  • Not Financially Challenged

Only financially challenged people are attracted to biz op and there are plenty of them including paid members of courses to make money

  • http://davidrisley.com David Risley

I don’t think it is limited to financial challenged people. It is an issue of mindset, not necessarily wallet.

If you’re always chasing the dollar you will never stop running. Just like any other business venture, if you can’t target your approach you aren’t going to reach your intended audience.

I think it is business interest and talent why there are successful people in business, What
important is you enjoy what you are doing and you’ll be able to help other.

Shit, I came here to link to one of your other posts around marketing & blogging and came across this one. It’ so something that needed to be talked about.

As you know I was with an MLM for 10 years before walking away from the industry. I can tell you from being in the trenches that the opportunity seekers have one thing they are going after that they feel will solve ALL of their problems. MONEY.

In the vast majority of cases they wanted the MLM to do for them in 2 months what their job’s hadn’t provided in 5, 10 or even 20 years.

Now that I’m in the blogging & consulting game nothing has changed. People are chasing the money. “How do I make the money?”…is what they all ask.

Like you, don’t get me wrong…there’s nothing wrong with fair exchange of value and being profitable.

The key is how does one serve best their gifts in a profitable manner and do it strategically and purposely? that’s how I choose to look at it today and it’s working pretty good.

It all comes back to one asking themselves better questions that lead to better outcomes for both us and the ones we choose to serve.

Well said David. I agree whole heartedly. In a strange way I envy folks who can sustain a level of focus and motivation simply from the promise of a CASH reward. That’s not me. Maybe this “internal compass” is in large part, the defining characteristic of those who succeed and exactly the thing that those who quit, do not have. Maybe it is the difference between short term “success” and sustained long term fulfillment.

I think there are a lot of in-person opportunities that can translate into online business. I  try to network whenever I can.
