Take a Tour of the Wild Side

I decided to set up a profile on Vimeo. So far, I’m impressed. And I think I might use the profile to do videos for this website – some personal and some business. I’ve got LOADS of video profiles across the Internet for PCMech.com, but the stuff I do for this site is pretty different and I need to split it up.

For my first masterpiece of theater, I give a private tour of David Risley Headquarters. Some people call it my house. And I show off my home office, which is where the magic happens.

And with that, your day is now complete.

Risley for President – Bloggers Unite!

In my off time, I am planning out my vision for taking over the world. It looks like my efforts are paying off. Bloggers, unite!

How To Get Twitter Followers

Yeah, I’m giving a self-proclaimed Twitter whore more attention, but I thought this was funny. And a creative way to get Twitter followers.

I’m sure putting that image at the half way point in the Youtube video gets a lot of guys to watch. ;)

Private Tour of PCMech HQ

This is a private, video tour I gave of my office a few months back and posted on PCMech. A few things have changed since then. One big one is that I dumped my PC and am now using a Mac Pro with 4 screens attached as my primary computer.

Google+Jaiku = Important

One thing that people in internet publishing need to watch is Google and it’s interest in the world of mobile technology. Google recently purchased Jaiku. Jaiku is a social platform very similar to Twitter, but even more focused on the cell phones. Google’s purchase of Jaiku, as well as talk of the upcoming Gphone, all point to the fact that Google is showing strong interest in entering the mobile market. Why? Because of mobile advertising. Google gives a lot of stuff away because they can make a fortune with the advertising. And while Gphones might not ultimately be free, they are likely to be easily accessible by people because Google is poised to make a lot of money on advertising. As publishers, it is necessary for us to pay attention because the use of the web on mobile devices is likely to increase very quickly if Google jumps in.

So, is your site optimized for display on a cell phone? I know none of mine are.

Where Should You Post Your Videos?

For those people who publish videos to the web, the default choice is often Youtube. And for good reason. Youtube is the de facto standard today in online video. It seems like everybody is posting to Youtube, so if you want viewers, that is the place to be. But, is it necessarily the best place to post? Not for everybody.

Here are the sites I mentioned:

Twitter – I Finally Found a Use

I have been a little wishy-washy on this whole Twitter thing. But, now I am a little less so. Why? Because I think I have finally settled on a reason why I will use it.

Twitter is easily one of those things you put into the “fad” category. And perhaps it is a bad, who knows. At it’s core, Twitter is nothing but a mini-blog service. REAL mini (only 140 character “posts” are allowed). But, what really turns this from a stupid idea into a truly useful application is the merging of this service with SMS and instant messaging technologies. And what really made me want to use Twitter is the Twitter Tools plugin for Wordpress, written by Alex King. You will see that I have Twitter integrated into the right sidebar of this website, along with the homepage of PC Mechanic.

Aside from group notifications via text messaging (which I saw first hand at BlogOrlando), using Twitter as a mini-blog for your site is a really cool application.

When we are setting up our websites, it is important to take into account eye path. The human eye is naturally drawn to certain things. People also tend to shift their eyes to certain things on a page. By knowing where their attention goes, you know where on your site to place elements that you want them to take note of. Traditional traffic reports can help. You can analyze the navigation paths, for example, and see which links people click on when they enter your site. A heat map, though, allows you to visualize what’s happening on your site. I have not found a better way to get this done than CrazyEgg.I figured the best way to illustrate to you what CrazyEgg is all about is to show you, so check out my video below. The only drawback to it is the limitation of the number of pages you can test. Many of us use content management systems of some sort, such as Wordpress. That means that adding code to your footer file (or template) means the code is on your whole site. It’s global. But, CrazyEgg only tests one page at a time. And the most expensive ac count only allows 100 different pages.

Aside from that, this is a great tool in the arsenal of any web designer or webmaster.
