Should You Buy That Internet Marketing Product?

If you follow the world of internet marketing (and you should, I think), then you are used to being pitched. There are product launches almost every week. Should you buy anything? How do you decide?

Saying No

The ability to say no is important, but you don’t necessarily want to say no to everything. When I was at the Mass Control event in San Diego, most of the speakers made a pitch at the end of their talk. This is pretty customary for a marketing event. I pretty much expect it.

I almost always say no. I get what content I can from the speaker’s talk, then I just watch how they make the offer. I’ve already made the decision not to buy, but I observe how they go about making the offer.

Shiny Objects

At Mass Control, we were pitched a variety of different products. Ryan Deiss’s Continuity Blueprint. Harold Kilstein’s NLP Copywriting package. Perry Belcher’s social media program. The list goes on. All these different products work, but they also tug you in different directions.

See, almost any of these guys have a system which works. But, if you attempt to follow more than one of these things, you’re going to be working against yourself. So, I always recommend that you choose ONE person’s product that resonates with you and your goals. Buy that one and then go through the entire thing and actually DO what the courses teaches you to do.

What if you already have an existing business or are already working on something? Then, see if one of the offers would serve to fill a hole in your knowledge that you think you need for what you’re already doing. As attractive as other offers may be, be careful not to buy something that would tug you into a completely different business model.

For example, Bob Sterling offered a product on licensing and how to get into that business. Essentially, it turns you into a middleman for JVs of different types. Certainly an interesting and profitable business model. However, it has absolutely nothing to do with what I do. So, as cool as it might sound, I avoid it.

Don’t get distracted by the shiny objects. There are a lot of them out there. A lot of “gurus”. My advice: Choose one that resonates with you and just go with that. Say no to the rest unless you develop a need. But, don’t just buy something on a whim because the person’s marketing happened to be really good.

Do you buy internet marketing products? Which ones? And do you have a hard time saying no?

Dave, I totally agree with you. Your head will be spinning (mine has) as you look at the next “new” shinny thing! The best thing to do is to find and follow a few good bloggers and IM gurus whose styles you like and stick only with them. Personally, You, Yaro and Jeff Walker (and a little Frank Kern) are ones that I find to be the best for my business and personality.

Find a business model/niche and style that you like and build your business around that. If not, you will be constantly chasing your tail if every week you are trying some new thing.

I agree as well. I have been in the Internet Marketing business for over 10 years now and have bought 10′s of thousands of dollars worth of products over the years. I have always spent the most at Internet Weekend Seminars, like the one you went to this weekend.

It absolutely tears you in all sorts of directions when you try and do them all. I have found that I get so much more done and make more money when I focus on one system and go with it.

I agree with you as well Dave there is only so much time to get things done and you can’t be a scatterbrain with 10 different systems that you purchase.

I do believe thought that there is great systems out there and I have bought a few but I have also bought a few duds from some pretty well thought of names in the Internet Marketing World so “Let the Buyer Beware.” Do your homework! Don’t be afraid to go back on these guys once you receive their “System” and it is not what you thought it to be, send it back (in a reasonable 2 to 5 days) they all have gurantees get your money back.

My final thought is the old adage that was around about 20 years ago but then came back in the most recent boom was — “If You Want to Make Money In Real Estate, Write a Book About it!.” I very much feel that that is the case in Internet Marketing right now so yes I will say it…”Want to Make Money In Internet Marketing, Write A Book or Create a System About it!”

My problem with “most” of the programs is that they do not give you enough inormation to actually make things happen. I have bought several programs only to be wold that the most important information is obtained via the upsale product. It’s a never ending cycle!

I have experienced that quite often myself or they give you all this HYPE and Testimonials (audio, video, written, etc.) yet it is a total leap of faith and inevitably it lets you down or the whole thing you paid for is a story about how you need to buy the upsell.

Lately, my favorite is the Jeff Walker program that he had a bunch of his internet friends hype up (cough cough Jason Van Orden) and they start playing the Robert Cialdini tactics on you by making you wait for it to come back onto the market. Then when it does come back on the market for $1700+ dollars, they take it down immediately withing 24hours thus playing another Cialdini tactic of Scarcity on buyers. To me, I will never buy even the best products under such conditions, even if it is the best product in the world 24 hour window to make a $1,700+ decision, please give me a break

Seems as though there are many many products out there, some good and some not so good. They will bomb your email inbox with desperate headlines. I do not go for them at all.

I especially like those that say 1 day only or you only have 15 min to buy. Truth is that is not true. Just be aware they are trying to make money just like the rest of us but sometimes they hype up the content.

    David,

Your right on target here. Yes I buy products, I think you need to if you plan to make and sell your own! I recently bought, Mike Filsaime’s “Butterfly Marketing” 2.0. This program is worth every penny and I will be working it for at least 60-90 days before I even look at anything else. DVD’s Audio, hard copy’s, install scripts, bonus, the hole nine yards plus a bunch of up sells but I said no to those.

I think it ok to buy but you got to have a need for the program. Make sure not to fall in to the keep buying trap which many do and then they never accomplish anything. There must be some doing actually a whole lot of doing in this business. Good pay programs are usually a little better structured then the free stuff.

Your got some great advice above. Don’t buy on a whim I like that one. If you do buy or better yet before you buy set a goal for yourself as to what your planing to accomplish with this product or purchase. I have a rule one program at a time and you must complete it or get your money’s worth out of it before you can move to something else.

Yes I buy internet products and services. I try to be very discerning though. First I separate the crap from the good stuff; then, as others have correctly pointed out, I try to focus on how this will help me with what I’m currently doing. If I’m not disciplined I’ll end up buying something that will just sidetrack me from my current project.

After purchasing something online, we all are faced with those pesky “one time offers” that suddenly pop up on the screen. Some are very tempting and the “one time only” nature of a terrific offer will often compell one to buy.

Here’s a simple tip I use when faced with such an offer. I just bookmark the pesky “one time offer” with my Google bookmark. That way I can take all the time I need to decide if I want it, then return to the offer page when I’m good and ready. The “one time only offer” sits patiently in my Google bookmarks waiting for my decision.
