Lesson From Izeafest (Day One)

As I sit here in the conference room getting ready for Day 2 of Izeafest, yesterday made clear a lesson…

This business is NOT complicated. The only secret there is is TAKING ACTION.

Yesterday, we listened to people like Brian Clark (from Copyblogger), Sarah Evans, Ted Murphy and others. All of them “experts” and at the top of their game when it comes to online/social media. They are on stage and they’re talking. They are perceived by the audience as experts because of that.

However, are they really experts?

3976572824_dfaf8cca61The answer is yes, however so are a lot of people in the audience. And that’s my point. All of these experts are basically saying the same basic things when it comes to building brand, building traffic, etc. When I go to BlogWorld in a couple weeks, they will be saying the same things.

The truth is that this business is not really that complicated. It comes down to the basics.

The difference between those people on stage and those people in the audience is that the audience hasn’t used their knowledge and taken the same actions as the people on the stage.

When I come to these events, whether I am speaking or not, I have people who want to meet me, perceiving me as some kind of expert. Am I? There are people in this room who know as much as I do (if not more). The only difference is that I have DONE things that others haven’t. That’s it. And the people on stage have done things that others haven’t.

So, by all means, learn. Keep learning. But, don’t ever stop DOING. You’ve got to BRING IT!

And if you do that, you might find yourself on a stage some day.

Nice Post David, and good pic you took of me with chris b :)
  • This post is so dead on - DOING is the only thing that will grow your online (or offline) business.

A commitment to lifelong learning is great - but all the theory, coaching, and educational opportunities in the world won't produce a fraction of the results you will achieve by simply taking ACTION.

Great post - glad I found your blog!

I'm all about the Do Do Do message :) Love this post!

I have a few coaching clients that I'm sure already know what I tell them.

In some cases, I've realized that they WANT to be told what to do. Knowing isn't enough - they need the specific direction. They want to be managed.

What do you think about that?
  • David,
Great seeing you at izeafest. Couldnt agree more, there really is no secret formula to it, doing it, getting started seems to be the biggest challenge we face. Good conf though, I enjoyed it. See you at blogworld.
  • Sage counsel. It really does come down to action.
  • You're right, David. An expert today can be someone who has actually done the things they talk about and not just know the theory.

Social media (the internet to start with and then all these other things) was meant to be about peer-to-peer and how people trusted friends more than experts.

Roll on the day say I!
  • You couldn't have summed up that concept any better! Not to endorse a certain shoe company, but the quote that say most often to people is "just do it."

Psychologically though, I think some people who are very bright but "talk it up" instead of doing it, have this underlying fear of failure. It takes a lot of fortitude to put 110% effort into something with the possibility you're not actually going to succeed at at.
  • "So, by all means, learn. Keep learning. But, don’t ever stop DOING. You’ve got to BRING IT!"

    ABSOLUTELY!!!
  • I've been watching online and was thinking the same thing. There's only so much to talk about, it is simply a matter of doing the hard work to get there. My task now is to work more on my USP and improve my brand so that I'm doing what I love.
  • Great solid advice David....
  • Very good!

I'm off to Silicon Valley Code Camp in a few minutes, taking another step in the "doing."

An academic advisor of mine used to say "Keep it simple. Simple is hard enough."
  • David you are spot on when you say "The truth is that this business is not really that complicated. It comes down to the basics." The key is doing it. And not spending so much time over thinking it. Thanks for your thoughts on day one of Izeafest. I may have to try to make it next year.
