How to Outsource Your Online Content Creation, But STILL Keep Control of It!

This is a guest post by Chris C. Ducker.

Blogging, writing and creating content can be a great way to get your point across, help people, promote yourself, build a business and lots of other things.

I don’t know about you guys, but when I was at college I used to write a lot. I was always working on some short story, or the odd essay for school. I was, and still am a big reader – averaging at least one book (normally business focused) a week. (I’ve recently gone back to purchasing ‘real’ books, and not downloading them on Kindle. I just miss the feeling of holding and smelling a ‘real’ book – does anyone resonate with me on that?).

Anyway, I digress…

As someone who owns and operates an outsourcing company in the Philippines, I see a lot of people contacting us to outsource all types of tasks. Telemarketing, customer service, back-office work, chat support – the list is, literally, endless.

Plus, as someone that is seen as a bit of an expert on the subject of virtual business and in particular, working with virtual assistants, as well as being a blogger myself, I am often asked the question “Can you use virtual assistants to create original content to use online..?”

The answer is yes, of course you can.

But, what you decide to do with that content is a different ballgame, obviously.

Here are a handful of tips worth considering if you’re looking to hire a virtual assistant to create original content that you can use online, for either personal or business purposes.

  1. Don’t get a VA to unashamedly write blog posts for your personal blog. Your personal blog should be ‘your place’ (except for the odd guest post, obviously!). Having a VA write content for this outlet of yours kind of defeats the object of blogging in the first place!
  2. If you are going to use a VA to help create content for your blog minimize it as much as possible. Activities such as online research for a particular article you are planning to write, then perhaps formatting your blog post with bold and italics, and headlines, etc. to help save time on the publishing side of things.
  3. VA’s are perfect for creating online content for anything related to link building. These articles are generally easy to write in a short time, are rarely seen by your target audience and work excellently. As long as they are 100% original. Plus, most VA’s can even go ahead and submit them to specific article submission or marketing sites for you.
  4. You can also use a VA to help edit your eBooks or other types of written content. Having a VA do the first round of proof reading is huge. You can then send it onto a second source (perhaps a colleague or family member – my favorite is my wife!) to give it the final once over.
  5. Be sure to pay your content writing VA what they are worth. There are many, many good VA’s working as full-time content creators. However, the fact of the matter is that if you don’t pay them what they are worth, they will either do a bad job for you, or simply not want to work with you at all.

Whether you’re utilizing the services of a domestically based virtual assistant (you can check out textbroker.com for this, as one resource), or one from another country, such as the Philippines, the simple rule of thumb to remember is that even though their writing may be good, it probably wont be as good as if you were to write the content yourself. So, always spend some time reading over their work and making sure that its good to go – before it goes!

Using virtual assistants for creative writing and other types of written tasks, such as sales copy, website content, etc. is ultimately a great move for all us who are busy business owners or entrepreneurs – either online or off.

Nowadays you really don’t have to do everything – the world is a much smaller place, we’re in a global economy and the skill-set’s of people from all around the world are out there for us to get our hands on and utilize.

Try it out for yourself with a simple 500-word article on whatever subject you can think of. Look at the quality, and then simply figure out if it makes sense to do it again. And again. And again.

The chances are, it will be.

    Really Needful Post..Thanks for sharing..David Sir…
And Outsourcing for Blogging can be costly also….

It really depends on the niche that you are in and how you are going to use them. Part of my business is actually content creation for other people’s site. I tried outsourcing as a way to increase volume of my business. The problem was to make it profitable, I had to use someone from the Philippines who didn’t really understand the niche. I ended up having to edit each piece. Also, they were often behind schedule.

As for having them create content for my blog, I don’t know about that. I am the “expert,” and the actually like writing my posts, after all that is one of the reasons why I started the blog in the first place. It would also become expensive depending on your financial situation. But I would consider outsourcing the work for a paid site if it were economically feasible.

I learned a lot with my outsourcing experience – some good, some bad. I still outsource work, but now I do it differently. One way that I am currently using outsourcing is to have articles rewritten. This is a great way to have new content for article marketings campaigns without having duplicate content on your site and directories.

All in all, outsourcing is good depending on your needs, financial situation and the quality of work.

I would have never thought to outsource my content writing, as I feel I can write the best as me, and I’m only comfortable with writing myself, because it is my own blog.. But I had not thought about outsourcing copy or proofreading, for example. Good idea. Thanks.

Part of my business is content creation for other’s sites. Usually it’s static content for the website but occasionally it is for blog posts. I agree if you have a personal brand it’s a little like cheating to use someone else’s writing “voice” to sell yourself. However, if the point of the posts is to be largely informational and attract people to your website I think it works — you are not really selling the brand in that case but something else, like maybe your services that are unrelated to writing or a product or something.

In short outsourcing your blog posts to build your brand = bad. Outsourcing your posts to put out valuable information that attracts people to your website to sell something = I think that’s OK :)

Outsourcing is just a fancy way of saying hiring staff, and with that comes all sorts of pitfalls. As long as you have the work for them and a procedure in place for them to work to, it does free you up for other tasks. The big mistake is not to keep a check on what work they are putting out for you, which is a time involvement on your part, but if the business is sound you should be in front.

You make some great points, here, buddy.

You need to have a reportorial system in place. However, with something as simple as Content Creation, it should be “Create 5 articles today…” sort of thing. This is the way I work with my content creator VA and he does a great job.

    Thanks for the comment.

    Hi Betty!

Could not agree more – you should never get someone to write your own blog content. It kinda defeats the idea behind having a blog in the first place, anyway, right..!?!! lol

Content creation VA’s, like I stated in the post, are aimed more towards article submissions, etc. Good luck with your biz!C

    Hi Cynthia

Glad to get you thinking about this… You’ll find it does free you up.

Go slowly, and build things up nice and easy – you’ll love it eventually…!C

    Hi Brad

You make some really valid oints here, and like I said, usually you WILL have to finalize a the content before you can publish it. I guess it just comes down to how much time you want/need to free up.

It does, at the end of the day, come down to money though. ie. is it worth it…?!

Freedom of time is also a beautiful thing…..C

good post chris. Outsourcing is definitely important because we cant do it all, its near impossible to create a successful business on our own.

Thank you for another thought provoking post, Chris.

I’m not yet ready to outsource my content creation. Perhaps the re-purposing and syndication of content but not the actual writing of it. I’m all for outsourcing but content creation is one area that I’m keeping to myself at least for the time being.

Really Nice Tip, I am a regular reader of your blog posts.. And always want to know you write your post yourself? or outsource ..?
May be it’s a another investment for bloggers ha ha ah

  • http://twitter.com/bradgerlach Brad Gerlach

Absolutely Chris, time and the convenience is definitely worth the cost. And if I find a cost effective way, I would definitely consider it.

Your post has planted a seed in my head of a project that could be primarily outsourced. It is something that has been on the back burner because of time restraints. If I pull the trigger, my one writer will owe you for the continuous work she will have :-)

    Chris,

Great post mate! Really timely too because I have been sitting on the fence about VSF for ages simply because well, I don’t know actually.

I outsource all my linkbuilding and do this on a per job basis so obviously do not require a VA per say, but all my time (literally) is now taken up with content creation for at least 12 different niches (and I am slowly going insane) I always knew I could outsource this but I tried it once through the WF and the quality was so bad I just never looked elsewhere.

This is probably written on your site somewhere but I am lazy so I’d rather just ask here:

Can I hire a VA to write content for me and also submit it through UAW (if I give them my access) and if so, how much is the minimum? I was always under the assumption that a VA cost like $400 a month minimum and for that did X hours of whatever task you wanted them to do?

Clearly I have no idea – fill me in brother, I’m ready to take the plunge!!

Oh, and awesome post man – and digress away.

VA’s can be very useful in helping you find affiliates. I totally agree with you that your VA shouldn’t be blogging as you on your blog… that can quickly dilute your brand.

Alex… Get back to me on my VBL email on this, buddy.

I will sit down and work it all out for you with my team.C

    Hi Hans

I can assure you that I do, personally write all of my own blog posts! LOL

Maybe I can find a clone to do my video work though…?! What do you think..!?!!Thanks for the comment.C

Great tips indeed. virtual personal assistants are really useful for anyone’s online business. They can even audit your products and sales even if you’re 10,000 km away from each other. for as long as there’s an internet connection and electricity they can work and do the tasks that needs to be done. :-)
