Product Launch Platforms To Make Your Life Easy

As a person who has been in internet business for awhile, I remember when things were hard.

I remember the days before WordPress. I remember programming my OWN content management system to power my site. I remember having to do everything myself, or else pay some programmer who loved to make things seem like a bigger deal than they really were.

Those were the pioneer days where, well…. shit was just hard to do.

Today, we have WordPress, with the myriad of themes and awesome plug-ins. And it keeps getting better – and easier – as now, even the process of doing a product launch is becoming SO much easier.

When This Applies To YOU

A lot of bloggers read about these things and the point is lost on them. Perhaps you think you’ll never do a product launch. Or perhaps you think (mistakenly) that a launch is only something “those marketer people” do.

Simply put, if you want to start making real money…. stop blogging and launch something. M’kay? You need to stop being a blogger, and start being an entrepreneur with a blog.

Blogging alone is nothing but a big hamster wheel. It is time to upset the status quo, step out of the comfort zone, and start making real money online. Whatever your niche, you should be gearing up to launch a product. It could be a simple e-book. It could be a little video series. It doesn’t have to be a huge product, but put it together and launch it. Throw up a little sales letter and sell it on Clickbank or something. Do SOMETHING other than just blogging.

So, when does all of this launch stuff apply to you? It should apply to you right NOW.

OK, moving on…

What Makes Product Launches Difficult?

Well, launches are a LOT of work. There’s no way to get around that one. I’m actually in the process of preparing for a launch now and it is a LOT of work. That said, the technical part of it is so much easier now.

Typically, there are a lot of separate systems that have to be made to work. Plus, timing is an issue. A launch is an event and you need things to fire on time and just work. Most launches, too, have a prelaunch period where several pieces of content are released. Each has to be set up on the web. The interrelationship between the multiple pages has to be set up. All of it has to be hooked up to your email list, with people routed to the correct page. Then, you’ve got the technical portion of setting up the product delivery site (which might be a membership portal). Shopping carts. Affiliate tracking.

In a word – ugh. Last time I did a launch, I literally had to diagram out an entire flow chart of the way things were supposed to link together. Even with that, I goofed up some things.

There are a lot of moving pieces to conducting a launch – all in addition to the content creation that always goes with it.

Fortunately, a wave of new software is making our lives easier.

Third-Party Hosted Solutions

There seems to be a wave of these things coming down the pike. The first one to be launched was Kajabi.

Now, Kajabi, by all accounts, was a bit of a train-wreck. I was seriously considering signing up, but I decided to let it slide for a bit to see what kinds of growing pains they experienced. And, boy, did they experience them. Kajabi looks like it was rushed to market and it was not ready for primetime. In the long run, I think Kajabi will prove to be a solid platform, but no doubt the rush to market has tarnished their reputation. It just didn’t work very well. I was disappointed, too, because I really thought it would be better than that.

Next, we have FusionHQ. This solution looks to be REALLY solid and I have just recently signed up for it myself in order to get a feel for it. Fusion offers many of the things I thought were missing from Kajabi, including the ability to keep all your own hosting (with Kajabi, you were more tied into their hosting). You can easily set up sales funnels, membership sites, launch funnels – all of it on automatic and without knowing a lick of code. FusionHQ is on closed signup, which means you have to get on a waiting list. They are scaling up in a controlled manner in order to avoid all the Kajabi-esque problems.

There are several others coming down the pike. I’ve heard rumors of them, but no experience at all. So, we shall wait and see.

WordPress Solutions

Sometimes you want the design stuff taken care of and that’s it. You want to keep everything on your own servers. And you don’t want to take on a monthly fee of a third-party service. Luckily, there are a couple of awesome solutions out for WordPress.

The first is called OptimizePress. This is a theme for WordPress which is specifically designed for marketing funnels and membership portals. It allows you to quickly put together squeeze pages, launch pages, sales pages, etc. It takes care of integration with your email list, design of your membership site pages, embedding videos and making them HTML5 compatible, etc. I have purchased OptimizePress and am already starting to use it to set up for a coming launch. So far, I’m quite impressed and it is going to save me a LOT of time. Lots!

The other one is called JVPress. JVPress appears to be a feature-by-feature competitor of OptimizePress. The only difference that I can tell is that JVPress currently handles a “rolling launch” better than OptimizePress. That said, I’m pretty sure that’s coming soon on OP, so essentially these solutions are the same. It just depends on which templates you like better, really.

The thing to keep in mind is that both of these solutions are THEMES. This means they help you immensely when it comes to design and site setup. However, you will not have the sales funnel design and the various automatic tools that comes with a third-party service like FusionHQ.

I have personally purchased BOTH OptimizePress and JVPress so that I can evaluate them. From what I have seen, I recommend either of these to you. They both look extremely solid, so it really just comes down to personal preference. I will be doing more in-depth reviews of both in the near future.

No Excuses Anymore

It really is getting to a point where marketing online is commoditizing and literally anybody can do it and look professional in the process. You barely even need to build anything anymore. You don’t have to be a webmaster.

If you have something to teach, you can now launch it in a damn-near plug-and-play fashion.

So, definitely, check out the solutions listed above. I’ll be talking more about all of them in the near future. :)

    Hi David,

    Thanks for the nice overview.

I tested as well Kajabi … and skipped it. Next week I will test FusionHQ. The support is awesome. My main problem is to adapt everything to the German market. Let’s see how FusionHQ can handle it.

JVPress I did not know; so thanks for your hint.

Hey David…Common now…When This Apples To YOU ??

  • http://davidrisley.com David Risley

    Huh?

  • Anonymous

Gotta love OptimizePress.. It just makes stuff easy and I agree there is no excuse and nowhere to hide anymore. Getting your product set up to launch is all about knowing the correct software to use… (well apart from developing the content of course…)

  • Anonymous

I think he means the typo on the first sub-head… s** happens..

  • http://davidrisley.com David Risley

    Whoah, I’m an idiot. :-/

A question for you Dave or anyone else who has some insight:

For ebooks do you think there is a percieved value difference at a price point of $22 compared to $17? Or do you think you could just as easily charge $22 as you could $17?

  • Anonymous

Thanks David. Giving my business over to Kajabi was something I didn’t want to do. I’ll be interested to hear what you think of Fusion.

I much prefer buying stuff once off.

  • http://DonnyGamble.com Donny Gamble

I really want to try Kajabi, but the only thing that I really don’t like about it is the fact that all your content is hosted on their servers. Other than that, everything looks amazing.

  • Anthony

Just wrapping up a product launch. I started preparing the launch before all of these solutions came out. I will never never never set-up my own launch again. I work with WordPress for a living…so I didn’t think it would be so bad. OMFG it took FOREVER to set everything up…and it still didn’t turn out like I wanted it. What a waste of time (and therefore money).

I’m off to buy one of these sweet ladies…not sure which yet.

  • Anthony

I do think there is a perceived value difference. Without going into detail you’re probably better off sticking with something like $19.99. It might be “cheesy”…but it works. That’s why big companies (and pro IM’ers do it).

Man, you’re website is really really nice. But, I have no clue what you do or what you want to teach me when I first land there. I’d take that first paragraph from your “edge sessions” page and put it in your banner instead of “embrace your skull for impact”. Don’t forget that most people have the attention span of a 2 year old (myself included).

I hope I don’t sound like an ass. Just trying to be helpful. Btw, I’m not teaching mmo, so I’m kind of your target audience.

If you like giving your affiliates instant commissions, you can also use Rapid Action Profits – it lets you set individual JV and affiliate commissions for individual, well, individuals too.

Great overview. I had not heard oh FusionHQ.

Sounds to me like OP and JVP only help with the presentation of pages, so I guess anyone knows WP & CSS wouldn’t need to consider these options, am I right?

  • David Jehlen

    Test, test, test.

  • David Jehlen

As a guy who does launches for others I wanted to jump on the Kajabi train as well. I mean who doesn’t want to simplify things? Heard too many challenges with it from my peers. Thanks for the WP theme recommendations. I will check them out.

  • http://www.edgeofdavid.com/blog Edge of David

No feedback is cool. I don’t think there is percieved value as it applies to 17 or 22. Like Dave (man a lot of Daves here) said below, test. I think that is best to just do it and test, but I was curious as to the experience of others.

My site is about rejecting mediocrity in your life so it is not mmo per se, but more so personal development. The homepage “new start here page” explains that. I make my living as a search marketer, so edge sessions is about teaching you how to make a location independent income to take more control of your life. Anyways, contact me via email if you have feedback, I always enjoy constructive criticism.

  • Anthony

Read my tweet below. I thought the same thing. I was wrong!

  • http://www.produktlaunch.com Thomas Stuenkel

Like David Jehlen wrote: test, test, test

The only way to find THE BEST price is to do split testing. Try at least three different price points e.g. $17, $27 and $47.

  • Jeffrey Morgan

    Hi David,
You failed to mention the pricing of “FusionHQ”. I could not find this information on the Website. Can you give us a heads up in that regard.
Thanks for the tips on Optimize and JV Press. You’ve got to love those plug-ins!!!

I’m still just a “hard code” guy down deep. I miss the good old days.

  • http://davidrisley.com David Risley

The “hard code” way is really slow, though. :-)

If you get on the Fusion waiting list, you might be an “in” at $97/month. I think when they go fully public, it’ll be $197/month.

  • http://davidrisley.com David Risley

Yeah, any of these things would be a big time-saver off of doing it all manually. :-)

  • http://davidrisley.com David Risley

Yeah, that was a sticking point for me, too.

  • http://davidrisley.com David Risley

Doubt the pricing will make much of a difference, but just test it out. :-) In the end, both prices are low, so the perceived value will be about the same either way. Conversion is the thing that’ll have to be tested.

  • http://www.shawnchristenson.com Shawn Christenson

‘Common now…’ ? Do you mean ‘Come on now…’?

  • Mark Mobley

Price is one thing but what you get for your money is another. $197 a month may seem high but from what I have seen that could be high value if you are doing a lot of launches or are totally new to blogging.

  • http://healthmoneysuccess.com Vincent

I’m looking at Optimize Press right now. It really look pretty awesome and being able to squeeze page and sale page within the theme is pretty neat too.

    Cheers,
    Vincent

    David,

Do you recommend doing having a separate site for a product and launch? Or is it possible to to have the sales page your main site?

The reason I ask is because I already have a product. I started it years ago, but I have it as part of my site. The reason I did it this way is so that the affiliates also drive traffic to my main site/blog. Is that wrong, should I do a relaunch with a separate site?

Thanks for your input. Your articles are very helpful and get my wheels moving..

  • http://davidrisley.com David Risley

Depends on how you have it set up, really. The benefit of a separate site is that you don’t have the distractions of your main site. Most blogs have a lot of visual clutter… its just the way it is. When you send them to a separate site which is dedicated to the product, you don’t have that distraction and you can focus more on putting them on your list, selling, etc. Plus, it makes word-of-mouth promotion of the product a lot easier.

Keep in mind, you can do both if you want. Maybe have the product independent, but also list it on your main site. Then just send incoming affiliate links to whichever has the highest conversion rate.

  • http://davidrisley.com David Risley

Agreed. People usually look at these things from the wrong perspective…. they focus on the spending to acquire the solution and not on what you can DO with the solution. All of these solutions, if you actually use them, will give you VERY high ROI. The key is to simply use the tool.

  • Ian Daniel

And get ready to explain when the guy that paid $47 sees it at $17! He’ll want your ass quick!

  • http://twitter.com/TheBettorGuide Frank Benjamin

Thank for the reply. I think my situation is a little different, since my site isn’t a typical blog. Though I post articles on upcoming games, editorials and site reviews, it is set up as a new site.

But you idea gave me an idea. I am going to use a wp-lugin to run my affiliate program “in-house.” But I still have people promoting the product via CB. I think I will take your advice and move make an independent site for the CB traffic and have the other affiliate direct traffic to my news site.

Thanks for the insight. Have a great Thanksgiving!

  • http://twitter.com/TheBettorGuide Frank Benjamin

I just purchased Optomizepress and it is exactly what I always wanted. I have decided to separate my product from my blog. I would like to do a launch, but I have no idea how. I know of Jeff Walker’s Product Launch Formula, but it isn’t currently available. Are there some resources I can be directed to to learn some basic principles of a launch?

  • http://www.buy-and-sell-cars-for-profit.com Steve

I’m looking for a WP theme to use for my membership site that will have the look and feel of a Kajabi site. Does anyone know of anything like that? OP is great for squeeze pages, etc. but to use it as a theme for my *140+ pages of already created content* would be to burdensome to change everything one page at a time.

  • chris

what WP-pluging are you using to manage your affiliate program?

  • Anonymous

Well, I went a completely different route after joining David’s BMC. I now give away my book for free. However, I am launching an affiliate program for my new membership site. For that I am using WP-Affiliate.
