How To Promote Products Without Pitching Anything

In the internet marketing space, the general audience is sensitive to being pitched these days. And, those of you in other markets tend to translate your own hesitancy for pitching into the minds of your audiences.

Either way, it is a mistake. The way I see it, this is a matter of language, and one of value.

If a marketer has a habit of creating real value on an ongoing basis, then the audience generally doesn’t mind the occasional pitch. It is when that marketer pitches so often that it upsets the value proposition that the audience usually revolts a bit. Personally, I think most people could stand to pitch MORE than they do, but there are many notable examples of online marketers where they never utter a peep unless it is to sell something.

As for language, the word “pitch” often comes with some negative connotations. But, words like “recommend” don’t have that vibe.

On that note, I’ve put together a quick video where I talk about how you can “pitch” a product to an audience in a way which avoids this whole mental game about selling. Its really very simple.

Here are the highlights:

  • Recommend a product in the course of showing your readers HOW to do something.
  • Through proper survey and being on the pulse, you should be able to know what your audience is dying to know how to pull off. Show them. And if a product makes the job easier, recommend it.
  • Make the product necessary in order to follow along with the tutorial.
That’s it. Easy as pie. It works in any market under the sun, as long as there are products to promote.

Doing reviews really is a good way of talking about something to give your views on it, but at the same  time its not a pitch.

    Hi David,

I agree with you about banner blindness.  Nice to sell the spot through sponsors but the click-through rates are negligible.

Also your formula is right on. I’ve done both, product reviews which were obviously product reviews and general post on how to do something which included an affiliate link; the latter one almost always had a better response.

I think that people just don’t feel like they are being “sold” to or their defenses of “they’re just trying to make money” conversation doesn’t comes up as much, ya know? ;-)

    Thanks for the tip!

    Hey David
I am doing more of this and it’s definitely the way to go.  Being a trusted advisor beats selling to people all day long.  It also increases the number and likelihood of quality referrals
    Thanks

I review products and give honest reviews, so the visitor doesn’t feel they are being sold..

Sure, I’m trying to sell a product for a commission, but I choose my words carefully. I even sometimes buy the product for review.

There are many, many Internet Marketers pushing garbage, so pick your mentor carefully.

    Good tip.
