Put Your Blog on The Amazon Kindle

Personally, I don’t own a Kindle. I might get one at some point. And I’m not sure what was just announced is going to do anything at all to make the device more attractive, but here it is.

You can now submit your blog to Amazon for inclusion on the Kindle.

You’ll need to create a new account (your Amazon account won’t work). And you’ll need to have a U.S. based bank account. But, you’ll set up your account, your payment info, and then you’ll set up your blog RSS feed and other related options.

The idea is that you, as a blogger, can get paid by Amazon for subscriptions. Yes, Kindle users have to pay a small subscription fee to read your blog from the device (which seems rather dumb when you can get it for free online, but whatever). Amazon splits the money 70/30 – they get the 70%.

I guess it can help with increased visibility, but don’t expect it to make you much money. Personally, I would not pay money for a blog if it is available on my computer for free, but perhaps some will.

    It depends on the blog, for some blogs I would pay money, but not much, maybe some pennies. But in my country (germany) amazon didn’t offer the kindle… Very anoying!!!

    Well, actually your blog isn’t free to view, I have to pay for the internet package to access it. Someone might consider it a convenience to view the blog on Kindle since they don’t have to have an internet enabled computer to view it. I’m not sure how popular it will be but it’s worth watching to see.

    LunaKM, perhaps. However, when one gets internet access, they can view anything on the Internet. When you pay for a single blog on the Kindle, all you can view is that single blog’s feed. Seems kinda limiting to me.

    I heard about this the other day and I’m still trying to decide if it makes sense. I don’t like the 70/30 split, that’s for sure. Seems a bit too lopsided in Amazon’s favour (but a smart money maker idea on their end, as I’m sure lots of bloggers will sign up just for the chance to make some extra money).

    Yep, still undecided but certainly not going to sign up, for now…

    What’s with the 70/30 split? Must EVERYTHING somehow be monetized? Seems ridiculous. I don’t even think the Kindle will end up catching on in the end. Maybe in train/subway cities, but beyond that? Makes little sense.

    I think the Kindle and it’s big brother (DX) will only really be used for newspaper and e-book reading. If you are going to surf the internet, why not just sit down at your laptop? Anyway, I believe the Kindle is a black/white screen and would not work well for blog reading. Am I wrong on this?

    If blog reading should go mainstream from the Kindle, the 70/30 model will fall apart and go FREE.

    I really don’t mind paying for the big blogs like gizmodo and boing boing… but i really can’t see people paying for my blog :) I like that you can get a bit of time away from the screen but still catch up on online news. It’s probably the thing i like most about my kindle.

    I am a Kindle 3 owner myself. In my opinion, the best feature of the Kindle is Amazon’s great customer service! My Kindle’s screen got broken after I accidentally dropped it from the table. A call to Amazon was all it took for them to offer to send me a brand new set – no visual verification of the broken set was required! 

    When I asked how I should ship my broken Kindle back to them, they told me to just dump it in the nearest recycling bin – they have plenty of new, functioning Kindles in the warehouse and a broken one wouldn’t be of any help!
