WordPress Makes a Twitter Clone
Automattic, the company behind WordPress, has re-made WordPress to work as a Twitter clone. Well, its not exactly a clone, but it works in a similar way.
It’s called Prologue, and it comes in the form of a WordPress theme. Basically, it takes WordPress down to bare minimum in terms of outward appearance, but provides a front-end form for users to submit their own entries to the mini-blog. Using standard WordPress user profiles and permissions, you can either choose to run it as a private mini-blog for your group or open it wide up for the public.
Being that it is built atop WordPress, it has a lot of capability that Twitter doesn’t. For example, you can tag all your posts. You can also allow users to post comments in response to your "tweets". This, to me, is a lot easier than having to reply to somebody by addressing them @username.
Pretty cool. Obviously this is something Twitter has not done – offer private label Twitter clones. This move by WordPress is compelling. I could think of some interesting applications for this.
